THE SMURF

To demonstrate just how dangerous China is, we shut down a Ky IP address to show readers just what reverse DNS does to a reactive firewall. After two to three hours offline we booted the network up and then the ASA’s Controller and who-la!

11:13:09 No other information shows but the Router Network address and 10.98.128.1 an ICANN Address which ICANN claims has a legitimate purpose.

This capture at 11:13:37 ( approximately-15 seconds later) shows an attack just outside the firewall-probably a reaction to the ICMP’s (Kiss of Death) delivered to the attacker.

One minute later, the site is still blinded 10.98.128.1 still undergoing ICMPS. No effect.  So we had the site pull up the webpage of the attacker and the view is cleared. (Below)

This shows the earlier threat board before the shutdown.

Earlier today Insight Cable issued the following email to the NAU:

Michael Willner has shared your correspondence with me.  We’re sensitive to the fact that you find this matter deeply concerning and want to address your concern as best we can.

We need access to the IP ranges you mention in order to function as an ISP, so essentially this issue is outside our span of control.  They are mostly valid public IP ranges used by major ISPs.  The exception, 10.xxx, is a private IP address range used for communication between internal systems.  Blocking those ranges would prevent us from functioning internally and from communicating with much of the outside world.

We acknowledge that remaining open to a given IP range means accepting both wanted and unwanted traffic.  I assure you we are constantly on the lookout for better ways to protect our customers from bot-nets and other malicious Internet behavior.  Our interests and our customers’ interests are identical in this.

Sincerely,

Paul Meltzer

Insight Communications

The hazards have been documented and after this address has been hacked eight times also documented by myself and others, we find a lot irony in protecting our privacy and secure documents-as did Sony and their customers.

In a decisive move the ICANN Board of Directors has resolved to drop the reference ”Terrorism” from its Draft Applicant Guidebook for new gTLDs and that the background check should be clarified to provide “detail and specificity”.

These latest ICANN Board decisions are in direct response to the call made by The Multilingual Internet Group Chairman Mr. Khaled Fattal’s letter on July 19, 2010. Chairman Fattal’s public objection and interventions during the ICANN Brussels, Belgium meeting last June started this campaign. His letter was highly critical of this new ICANN direction.

Many would recall the sternness of Chairman Fattal’s letter to ICANN’s Chairman, Board, President/CEO and GAC seriously criticizing this new unexplainable and offensive ICANN direction which was added without any definitions or parameters. In his letter Chairman Fattal also raised many serious concerns and questions and requested clarifications and answers, and an apology for this new direction.

In a statement on this new development Chairman Fattal said: ” I welcome this corrective decision by the Board of ICANN, I believe it was the only choice forward if they wanted to be seen as respectful and sensitive to the real issues and concerns of the IDN / Non-English speaking communities of the world while fulfilling their mandate to serve all internet stakeholders fairly, equally, equitably and respectfully per the Affirmation of Commitments it entered in with the US government.  Many issues remain of serious concern pertaining specifically to the New IDN gTLDs which currently continue to be as subsets to the New English/ASCII  gTLDs, commonly known as New gTLDs”.

Western, international and local Arabic press coverage of Chairman Fattal’s letter was widespread. It is believed to have contributed positively in helping ICANN see the errors of this poorly thought out direction and deciding to address it and correct it at Board level as Chairman Fattal had called for.

This and other ICANN Board of Directors’ resolutions took place on Saturday September 25, at its retreat in Trondheim, Norway.

A full statement by Group Chairman Fattal will be issued shortly on this encouraging new development.

While it may appear that the ICANN board seems to have listened and acted to correct its mistake and the mistake of the ICANN staff, many had already argued that ICANN left itself no way out but to drop this offensive term after Chairman Fattal and Dr Al-Zoman’s criticisms.

The questions that remain unanswered are:

- Why no formal clarifications as to how this term ended up in DAG4 out of nowhere while no record of it being tabled exist in this ICANN supposed transparent, bottom up processes .

- Why no definitions were provided in the first place, which is a standard professional protocol and which reflects poorly on ICANN drafters and their overseeing executives.

- And if an apology has been offered as had been requested by Chairman Fattal for this offensive direction / error.

The reference to “terrorism” first appeared in DAG4, the latest draft version of the guidebook. Chairman Fattal told ICANN this new direction could be seen by millions of Muslims and Arabs as racist, prejudicial and profiling.  Dr. Abdul-Aziz Al-Zoman of SaudiNIC criticized it arguing that it is not yet globally accepted as to who is a terrorist and who is a freedom fighter and that this ICANN direction takes it beyond its technical mandate.

The text of the new board resolution appears on the ICANN website at http://icann.org/en/minutes/resolutions-25sep10-en.htm .

The resolution is under the heading 2.8 Mitigating Malicious Conduct, and reads as follows:

While efforts to mitigate malicious conduct will continue, the implementation work completed to date by the community and staff to address the mitigation of malicious conduct issue is sufficient to proceed to launch the first New gTLD application round. The remaining issues should not delay launch with the following specific directives incorporated:

Background check: The background check should be clarified to provide detail and specificity in response to comment. The specific reference to terrorism will be removed (and the background check criteria will be revised). These clarifications regarding the background check criteria and process shall be included in the forthcoming version of the Applicant Guidebook.

Of course, if they drop the terrorism issue, then it allows countries like China and Russia to just hack away. We now have 516, 274 signatures on our petition to Congress, and that was just in twelve cities utilizing one hundred people.

Join us while we put a lid on the CANN.

SONY Hacked

About a week ago hackers from China using ICANN sponsored United States IP addresses hacked into Sony accounts containing personal information. When the extraction was finished, the hackers used a worm to shutdown the site. Interestingly enough, this information and a lot of other details came to light after it took the Chinese Underground three days to transport the information to Hong Kong from it’s headquarters in Beijing. Once in Hong Kong, operators used a stashed satellite phone to contact the CHUG office in Sidney then the information was passed on through a North American Underground Blog to the Kansas City Command Center on Saturday just before Easter. CHUG has had CHINA NET bugged for three years. NAIDI clouds watch the local ICANN servers in the 10, 78, 169 and 190. Data is still being examined with the issue. The rest of the data will arrive from Hong Kong tomorrow.

The information that was extracted was personal data, credit card information and the addresses and phone numbers of PS3 users.

Hackers used bogon (Bogus IP) addresses in China to access the ICANN servers in the United States.

ICANN NOW SEEN AS TERRORISTS

In an email from Attorney Samantha Eisner, Senior Counsel for ICANN received by the Underground whom operates this website,

Dear Mr. Crawford,

I am Senior Counsel to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (“ICANN”).  It has come to our attention that the ICANN logo appears in a 29 March 2011 posting on your blog, at http://thiswayupseattle.org/2011/03/29/icann/.  The ICANN logo, as well as other ICANN marks, are registered marks and ICANN has exclusive rights in these marks.  ICANN has not granted your organization any rights to use this logo, or any of ICANN’s registered marks.

I write to request that you immediately stop any and all use of the ICANN logo, and remove the ICANN logo from your website within 7 days or ICANN may need to undertake more formal action to protect its marks.

Please confirm your compliance with this request by contacting me directly through email or at the address below.

Best regards,
Samantha Eisner
Senior Counsel
ICANN
4676 Admiralty Way #330
Marina del Rey, California  90292
Direct Dial: +1 310 578 8631
Office Fax: +1 310 823 8649

Working under assumption that this would be a lawsuit protecting it terroristic mark, continued to use the logo. We still do.

On the 17th of May, ICANN members, cyber attacked CHANGE.org, another Human Rights Website, forcing the Underground to take a closer look at the Chinese Billionaires responsible for the influence and corruption associated with ICANN.

ICANN/IANA has been on our watch list for six years. Three years ago we mapped china net to identify elements of the food chain (sites that prey on North America for political reasons.) that were identified as predators.

There are more than 6 million maps mapped from 60 places in the world.

Our focus on terrorism continues today. The attack on CHANGE.org came on the 7th day in which Eisner referred to: “undertake more formal action”.
Samantha Eisner is listed on the California Bar Association. She has now been added to our most watch list.

Who is on this list?

China’s, Russian and German Internet moguls.

Change.org Victim of DDoS Attack From China

Apr 19, 2011 10:20 pm

By Michael Kan, IDG News

Change.org, an online petitioning platform, has come under an ongoing distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack originating from China after the site hosted a call urging Chinese authorities to release artist Ai Weiwei from custody.

The attacks, which started late Sunday, have nearly brought down the site, according to Change.org founder Ben Rattray.

DDoS attacks work by using hundreds or thousands of hacked computers to send traffic to a website, overwhelming it with data so it becomes inaccessible to normal users.

Change.org said the current attack originates from an expanding group of computers primarily based in China, and has yet to stop. This is the first time the site has been hit with a DDoS attack.

Change.org has been hosting a online petition calling for the release of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who is currently under arrest. The petition has attracted almost 100,000 people from 175 countries, making it one of Change.org’s most successful international campaigns, Rattray said.

“It’s pretty clear the attack is in response to the campaign,” he added. “It’s extraordinary that somebody in China with a high-level of technical sophistication can impact the ability for people around the world to organize.”

The online call coincided with demonstrations across the world this past Sunday, which also called for the artist’s release. Ai, who is also known for his activism, has been detained as part of a Chinese government crackdown on political dissidents in the country.

Authorities in the country have arrested other human rights activists and clamped down on the information flow, following previous online postings that began in February calling for a “Jasmine revolution” against the Chinese government.

Change.org is currently blocked in China. Internet censors in the country regularly block sites that are deemed to politically sensitive.

Despite the block, the computers involved in the DDoS attack are managing to find a way around the country’s national Internet firewall, said Rattray.

In the past, other sites have been the victims of cyber attacks coming from China. This March, blog publishing platform WordPress.com also reported being hit with a DDoS attack originating from China.

Chinese hackers have also allegedly launched cyber attacks to steal data from foreign energy accompanies, according to security vendor McAfee. In 2009, Google was also the victim of an attack originating from China that was aimed at accessing the Gmail accounts of human rights activists

The Chinese government has previously responded to these reports by denying it is involved in any cyberattacks, adding that China has also been a victim of hacking attempts.

The true source of DDoS attacks is often unclear. Although Change.org has traced the current attack to servers in China, it is also possible the computers are under the control of hackers based in another country.

Change.org reports that both the FBI and U.S. State Department are looking into the DDoS attack.

“We won’t stop or take down anything because of this DDoS attack,” Rattray said. “We believe in the fundamental right of the people to organize around issues they care about it.”

WordPress: DDoS Attacks Came From China

By Michael Kan, IDG News

The large distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks that hit the WordPress.com blog publishing platform last week originated from China, according to the founder of the site.

A DDOS attack involves harnessing hundreds or thousands of computers to simultaneously bombard a web site with data so it becomes overwhelmed. The computers in such attacks have typically been infected with malware so they can be used without the consent and awareness of their owners.

The attacks, which brought slowdowns to the WordPress.com site, were severe enough to interfere with the company’s three data centers in Chicago, San Antonio and Dallas. The site has since returned to normal as of Monday.

WordPress said last week the attacks might have been politically motivated and aimed at an unnamed Chinese-language blog, but it no longer has that view.

“Don’t think it’s politically motivated anymore,” WordPress Founder Matt Mullenweg said in an e-mail to IDG News Service. “However the attacks did originate in China.”

Mullenweg did not elaborate on the change in view or offer details on the source of the attacks.

The attacks directed “multiple Gigabits per second and tens of millions of packets per second” and were the “largest and most sustained” in its six-year history, Mullenweg previously said.

China has been frequently named as the country of origin for several major cyberattacks. Chinese hackers have been accused of launching cyber attacks to steal gigabytes of data from foreign energy companies, according to security vendor McAfee. In 2009, Google was also the victim of an attack that it alleged originated from China.

Very often the true source of a DDOS attack is unclear. While computers launching the attacks might be based in one country, they could be under control of hackers in a third country. Users at high risk of malware infections that can be used for DDOS attacks are those that don’t run anti-virus software, don’t keep their operating system updated or are running pirated operating systems that can’t be updated.

The Chinese government has responded to these reports, saying it denies being involved in any cyber attacks. “The allegation that China supports hacking is groundless,” a China foreign ministry spokesman said last month.

China’s ICANN Sleepers and IGMP protocol

In the 169 range of “special use” servers sponsored by ICANN are in fact used to spy on America. IP address http://169.254.185.199/ is one such example.

IGMP snooping is the process of listening to Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) network traffic. IGMP snooping, as implied by the name, is a feature that allows a network switch to listen in on the IGMP conversation between hosts and routers. By listening to these conversations the switch maintains a map of which links need which IP multicast streams. Multicasts may be filtered from the links which do not need them.

A switch will, by default, flood multicast traffic to all the ports in a broadcast domain (or the VLAN equivalent). Multicast can cause unnecessary load on host devices by requiring them to process packets they have not solicited. When purposefully exploited this is known as one variation of a denial-of-service attack. IGMP snooping is designed to prevent hosts on a local network from receiving traffic for a multicast group they have not explicitly joined. It provides switches with a mechanism to prune multicast traffic from links that do not contain a multicast listener (an IGMP client).

IGMP snooping allows a switch to only forward multicast traffic to the links that have solicited them. Essentially, IGMP snooping is a layer 2 optimization for the layer 3 IGMP. IGMP snooping takes place internally on switches and is not a protocol feature. Snooping is therefore especially useful for bandwidth-intensive IP multicast applications such as IPTV.

Proxy reporting

IGMP snooping with proxy reporting or report suppression actively filters IGMP packets in order to reduce load on the multicast router.[1] Joins and leaves heading upstream to the router are filtered so that only the minimal quantity of information is sent. The switch is trying to ensure the router only has a single entry for the group, regardless of how many active listeners there are. If there are two active listeners in a group and the first one leaves, then the switch determines that the router does not need this information since it does not affect the status of the group from the router’s point of view. However the next time there is a routine query from the router the switch will forward the reply from the remaining host, to prevent the router from believing there are no active listeners. It follows that in active IGMP snooping, the router will generally only know about the most recently joined member of the group.

Borrowed from wikipedia.

Sleepers-Snow leopards (we use them too..) make excellent sleepers using a series of sleep proxy commands similar to

2143    996    192.168.1.2    224.0.0.251    MDNS    Standard query PTR _sleep-proxy._udp.local, “QM” question

just outside your computer. (if it has no firewall) A sleeping server only activates when there is activity, when there is not,  sleeps again. If you run a firewall the sleeper uses a udp connection to access the inside of your firewall.

Oddly we found the excerpt of the following article somewhat unnerving:

Multicast DNS (mDNS) is a protocol that uses similar APIs to the unicast DNS system but implemented differently. Each computer on the LAN stores its own list of DNS records (e.g. A, MX, PTR, SRV, etc) and when an mDNS client wants to know the IP address of a PC given its name, the PC with the corresponding A record replies with its IP address. Wikipedia

The problem with mDNS is that it is spoof-able. Here is how it works. A mDNS enabled client will perform a mDNS query on a multicast address. All clients that listen on that address will respond back with their names. Now if we have two clients with the same name, who ever is the first, wins. So for example, if your word processing application decides to print a document by looking for printer.local, attackers can easily send a respond to that DNS query with a forged answer which instructs to look for the printer on a different IP address. Therefore, successfully hijacking/poisoning the local name for a duration of time.

On WiFi networks this type of attack might not be as useful because just picking up the DNS packets from the air and injecting forged DNS responses is easy, but there are many cases where mDNS attacks prove to be very, very useful. One such case is when performing enumeration. Due to the fact that most devices support mDNS to one degree or another, with a single multicast packet, attackers can learn plethora of useful things such as the available devices’ versions and types, administrative URLs, email addresses of the owners, support information, etc, etc, etc.

http://www.gnucitizen.org/blog/name-mdns-poisoning-attacks-inside-the-lan/

169.254.185.199

The above ip address has created botnets through the use of slammer worm attacks, a mixture of the sql slammer worm and mal-bots that when you repair your MBR (main boot record) the bots remain and can be called upon by the attacker  at any given time. China has been using XP and ubuntu for botnets for the past eight years. With ubuntu, it attacks the MBR through the grub loader. China has created more than 55,000 botnets in 2010.

ICANN denies that these events are occuring, however, we plan to call them on this.

TVA to shut down coal fired boilers-Higher prices for the home owner

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) — TVA Board member Mike Duncan hails from Inez, Kentucky; coal country. So he might not have surprised fellow Board members by criticizing TVA’s landmark $3-5 billion settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regarding pollution from its fossil fuel power plants.

“This settlement is also with some outside groups,” Duncan says.

“I did not envision this is part of what we should be doing. On a megawatt basis, it may be the most expensive (deal) that’s occurred in the country.”

TVA has spent almost $5 billion since 1977 to add scrubbers and other pollution control devices to the 59 boilers that generate almost two-thirds of the electricity it wholesales to power companies across the Southeastern United States.

“We realized we couldn’t keep all our older coal plants on line,” Chief Executive Officer Tom Kilgore says.

TVA has agreed to shut down 18 coal boilers at three power plants in over the next six years; ten at Johnsville, in Waverly, TN, six at Widows Creek, along the Guntersville Reservoir, and two at John Sevier, near Rogersville, TN.

“Those are not easy decisions,” Kilgore says. “But I think it’s the right thing to do.”

TVA plans to make up for the generation capacity lost by expanding use of solar, wind, hydro-electric, natural gas, and nuclear power. It also will invest $350 million toward initiatives to promote energy efficiency.

The shutdowns are expected to eliminate 200-400 jobs, Chief Operating Officer Bill McCollum told TVA Board members in Chattanooga Thursday.

“We believe there will be opportunities for people who want to stay with TVA, ” McCollum says.

Some workers would remain at their respective plants during the phase-out. Others would fill positions vacated when employees retire. Still others may be able to retrain or move to another TVA facility.

“We don’t anticipate reasonable people not being able to find a job in these tough times,” Kilgore says.

In a news release, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson hails the settlement as a plan to “save lives and prevent billions of dollars in health care costs” treating lung ailments and diseases, by “keeping hundreds of thousands of tons of pollutants out of the air” and creating so-called “green job opportunities.”

TVA has agreed to pay approximately $10 million in fines. Tennessee’s share is about $1 million. Alabama and Kentucky each will receive about $500,000.

Unanswered, and as yet unanswerable, how much, or when, the costs of the fix will show up on your electric bill.
